How Does This Affect You? Even If You Don’t Live Near the New Madrid Floodway

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ current plan is to rebuild the levee at 51 feet – 11 feet lower than its original height. Over 130,000 acres of rich, fertile farmland will still be left unprotected. How does this affect you, even if you live outside the New Madrid floodway?

  •  The 130,000 acres of farmland have the potential to feed over one million people a year.
  • Agriculture is the nation’s largest employer with more than 23 million jobs – 17 percent of the civilian workforce. Leaving 130,000 acres exposed to flooding affects jobs inside and outside of the floodway.
  • Over $85 million worth of crops will be exposed to potential flooding each year, affecting jobs inside and outside the New Madrid floodway.
